WHY DO PEOPLE JOIN CULTS?

An excellent article published by Psychology Today:

Why do people join and even appear to thrive in cult-like groups? Why do people join the Masons, the Rotarians or a political Party? Because of what they offer: friendship, connections, identity, an opportunity to make a contribution. Are the motives the same as joining the Order of the Solar Temple, the Branch Davidians, the Taliban, Hamas, or the Al Qua-eda? How are acceptable social groups and organizations different from (dangerous) cults?

There is a great deal of interest in “cults” which can take many forms: They may be religious or racial, political or mystical, self-help or pseudo-psychological, but they all have half a dozen recognizable characteristics:
Powerful and exclusive dedication/devotion to an explicit person or creed.

They use of “thought-reform” programmes to integrate, socialize, persuade and therefore control members.

A well thought through recruitment, selection and socialization process.

Attempts to maintain psychological and physical dependency among cult members.

Cults insist on reprogramming the way people see the world.

Consistent exploitation of group members specifically to advance the leaders goals.

Cults nearly always go in for milieu control signals: a different, unfamiliar setting with different rules, terms, behaviour patterns.

Ultimately using psychological and physical harm to cult members, their friends and relatives and possibly the community as a whole.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF F.A.C.T.

Dear Supporters,

I recently received a heartbreaking letter from some parents who are suffering over the loss of their child to an extremely destructive cult, much like the one that took my own daughter from me and drove her to suicide. Like all high-control / demand cults, this group is brainwashing followers into believing they should turn against their own loving families. Unfortunately, we have experienced and know all too well the enormous pain, struggle, worry and suffering that parents go through when their child is manipulated and brainwashed to turn against them, typically for the rest of their lives.

Though it is too late for my beloved daughter, we at FACT are doing our best to help save their child from this destructive group and end this poor family’s suffering. I am so disturbed, torn and in pain from listening to countless parents who contact me crying over the loss of their children to destructive groups, and it needs to stop. No family should ever have to experience and endure such a terrible ordeal in their lives, which is why it is our mission at FACT to end the destruction of our children and families.

Sincerely,

Tibor Stern
President of F.A.C.T.

HOPCC Complaints Keep Coming In...

Complaints keep coming in to FACT about the House of Prayer Christian Church’ (HOPCC), a.k.a The Place of Help, located at 2540 Airport Rd, Hinesville, GA, 31313. Though there are many claims being made about this church’s alleged nefarious activities, the ones that disturb us the most involve the separation and destruction of families. Many people claim to have been separated from their loved ones by the leader of this church, Pastor Rony Denis, who is allegedly brainwashing members into shunning anyone in their lives who is not a member and true supporter of his church.

We believe Pastor Denis has never experienced the horrible feeling of having someone you love dearly completely turn against you, even to the point of hatred. Imagine having your son or daughter decide never to want to speak with you again, or your husband or wife say they want a divorce, and all because you didn’t believe in or agree with the teachings and/or leadership within a church or group.

No one has the right to harm families in any way, shape or form, and we at FACT are devoted to stopping any destructive leaders and gurus who believe they can destroy families for their own benefit.
If you believe in our mission, please like and share our posts and FACT Facebook page with everyone you know.

Thank you for your support.

FACT Updates

Our daily mission at FACT is to help victims and families of destructive cults, educate the public, expose cult groups and try to hold these groups accountable for their actions. Though it is difficult work, every success, big or small, makes it all worth while. Here are some of the latest results from our efforts:

- We are happy to report that a grandmother who lost her grandchildren to a destructive cult group was able to regain custody after a long and arduous process.

- Our efforts to investigate and expose Victory Outreach Church in Santa Rosa, CA have led to FACT now working with the District Attourney’s office in that area on their preliminary investigation into the church and its leadership.

A heartbreaking victim support request

A passage from a heartbreaking victim support request sent in to our organization, about a minor trapped in a highly controlling and abusive cult:

"The family members who have [name removed] live in a cult like environment within this church. She is not allowed to have friends or associate with people outside the church. She was forbidden from having dolls or certain items that convey feminism. She and her older siblings are dominated and all choices are made for them. The head of cult family is a pedophile...he controls everything and everyone in that group."

We are working to free this young girl from this destructive and dangerous cult environment.

If you know someone in need of support, please have them contact us.
